Bo-Kaap
A vibrant neighborhood in Cape Town known for its colorful houses, rich Cape Malay culture, and historical significance.
Description
The Bo-Kaap is an incredible neighborhood that you simply have to visit! It is located at the base of Signal Hill, just outside the city center. The Bo-Kaap used to be called the Malay Quarter, and it has a rich history dating back to the 1760s.
Back then, lots of “huurhuisjes” (rental houses) were built and rented out to slaves who came all the way from Malaysia, Indonesia, and other parts of Africa to work in the Cape. These folks were known as Cape Malays and helped shape the culture and heritage of the Bo-Kaap!
