Robben Island Museum

A UNESCO World Heritage Site on an island, home to the former prison that held Nelson Mandela and others, symbolizing the triumph of the human spirit over adversity and injustice in South African history.

Description

Robben Island Museum (RIM) is a public entity responsible for managing, maintaining, and promoting Robben Island as a national estate and World Heritage Site. Established in 1997 by the Department of Arts and Culture, RIM preserves the island’s multi-layered history, which spans over 500 years as a place of isolation and imprisonment.

Visitors can explore the island’s rich heritage through guided tours, educational programs, and interactive exhibits. Key sites include the Maximum and Medium Security Prison Complexes, Robert Sobukwe’s House, World War II memorials, and the Mayibuye Archives.
